The Manticore

Perfectly replicates human voices, animal calls, and ambient sound — accurate enough to fool those who know the original voice. Used exclusively to draw isolated targets away from groups before engagement.

Launches barbed tail spines in silence. Three to twelve per volley. Each spine causes rapid progressive paralysis — three to five hits deliver a fatal dose within thirty minutes. Spines regenerate fully within days.

Three continuous rows of teeth operate simultaneously — front for tearing, middle for grinding, rear for anchoring. Nothing bitten by the Manticore has been recorded pulling free. Continuous replacement means tooth loss is irrelevant.

Consumes all physical evidence of its kills — bones, blood, equipment. Persian trackers followed one for six days and found only metallic fragments in the lair. This is why confirmation of the species was so difficult for ancient naturalists.
