Overview
Physical Form
Elongated necks — a physiological marker of their lineage, an adaptation that gave them the appearance of towering animals more than men. Skin like tanned leather over enormous frames, hands wide enough to grip a man's torso. Eyes set deep under protruding brows; teeth double-rowed according to some commentaries. Their footsteps left permanent impressions in stone.
Historical Record
The twelve Israelite spies returned from Canaan with this report (Numbers 13:33): 'There we saw the Nephilim — the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim — and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.' Three Anakim clans held the city of Hebron — the most fortified city in the region. Only Caleb drove them out. Joshua 11:22 records their near-extinction: 'None of the Anakim were left in the land of Israel; only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod did some remain.' Goliath of Gath descends from this remnant.
Combat Profile
Natural armor in the form of their bone density. A single Anakim warrior could rout a unit of standard soldiers through impact alone. Their long necks gave them extreme peripheral vision. The largest among them reportedly carried weapons hewn from stone too heavy for ten men to lift. Their weakness: coordinated projectile warfare at range.
